Module #1

3D Printer Analysis

Sample Quality

The samples seem to be roughly made (as they were created by the 3D printer) and need to be sanded down to be smooth. We think that if the steps were closer together for the creation, it would have taken longer but been more precise. The plastic is very strong, but probably only in the direction that it's laid down. If the chain links were made perpendicular to the direction of the links, they would be weaker overall. On the measurement tool, there are areas that aren't fully cohesive because the distance between the points got too long.

Limitations of 3D Printers

The immediate observation is that it takes a very long time to make a good 3D print. Another is that there is a size restriction for whatever is being printed, because if it's bigger than the printer itself it would need to be built in parts afterwards.

Gadget Ideas

Bedside Organizer

All college students share a very annoying problem, no bedside space. At night we have nowhere to place our phones, remotes or gaming controllers for safe and easy access. Thats why we, The PioNeers, have decided to create a 3D printed bedside organizer. This organizer will be anchored under the mattress and will hang off the side of the bed with a large container adjacent to the bed.

SHU Card Holder

At Sacred Heart, we use our SHU cards for everything - from getting dinner to buying coffee to getting into our dorm rooms. We are thinking about making a medium to small gadget that attaches to a backpack, which is used to hold students' SHU cards so that they can be easily taken out when needed.

Phone Charger

Everyone has the problem with their phone charger cord always breaking at the point where cord and the plastic meet. So I want to create a cast type piece of plastic to keep the the cord from bending and breaking. When you put the cast around the cord, the cord will be prevented to break and why will be able to keep your cords for much longer.

Evaluation

The metrics of evaluation were utility, ease of use, simplicity, and speed (from 1-5). The scores were:

utility | ease of use | simplicity | speed | total
Bedside Organizer:    5      -        3        -        1      -      1    -   10
SHU Card Holder:      5      -        4        -        2      -      3    -   14
Phone Charger:          3      -        4        -        3      -      5    -   15

Where the Phone Charger seemed to be the best idea.

  1. Great choice of picture. Never knew that there was a 3d printed car, and even more cool that its the first one ever. Great job!

  2. Like this group mentioned, the obvious problem with 3D printing is limitation of size, especially with box 3D printers.

    1. Good point. There are 3d printer heads big enough to construct a house!

    2. That's another reason why we opted for the charger splint instead of the organizer - we wouldn't be able to print the organizer in one go.

  4. Very interesting concept. I can't imagine how much money would have to go into one of these.

  5. Great blog; nice organization. But you are missing the video.

  6. You had 3 really good and well thought out gadget designs. Your evaluation process was very thorough and I think your final idea of the phone charger case was very good. I would like to see how the clasp opens and closes and a more intricate description of how it will stay tightly on the charger end.

    1. There won't be an open/close mechanism because the clasp will just be slip on/slip off. The idea for staying on the charger end is that it will grip onto the wider area closer to the charger port. Thank for your feedback!

  7. Everything looks good and a stable phone charger is definitely something I would invest in. Your evaluation grading scale could have been a little easier to interpret but everything else is good.

  8. I like how you stuck with your cord protector idea because I can relate to the struggle of cords breaking or fraying at the end of the cord. I would definitely purchase one of these.

    1. To be honest, I've never had this problem. It's helpful to see that there are so many other people who have this issue, thanks!

  9. I think the idea of the charger splint is a great idea, but was also confused on your evaluation grading scale.

  10. I like the ideas you guys came up with. Going with the phone charger idea is going to be interesting to see. My question is, will it be a loose fit or snug fit around the cord.

  11. I think you did a great job explaining each of the objects, but I I feel as though you could have explained more in depth why you chose the object you chose.

    1. As a result of all the confusion with the evaluation, I changed the formatting to make more sense.

  12. Your idea is great, I hate when my phone wire rips and messes up the connection of the charger. Also, you did a good job explaining what you want your product to do.

  13. I like those ideas are really practical, but the one of the phone is the most interesting, the video explain really good everything.

  14. All good ideas. Would the SHU card holder be able to hold other cards someone may have, like a debit/credit card or drivers license?

  15. I like all the ideas, I cannot think of much criticism for them except some small things. The bedside organizer would be the most useful thing for sure. For the cardholder, I think a phone case with a cardholder would be a lot more convenient because not everyone carries backpacks throughout the whole day. I like the charger idea because it fixes a practical problem, but it seems like it would make the charger rigid, and not be able to bend.

  16. Is this cord protector universal or will it only work for Iphones?

  17. Have you tried the charger protector out yet? and if so how has it worked?
